There are a number of claims about the origin of the flying disc or "Frisbee" as it is usually known.
One convincing claim is that it was invented around 1850 by young people in New England, using empty pie tins from the ‘Frisbee Baking Company’ in Connecticut and finding they could fling them considerable distances and catch them.
It became popular when a plastic version was designed in the 1940’s, the aerodynamic disc or’ flying saucer’ as it is sometimes called.
It seems a simple idea today, the floating pie tin – it is claimed that 200 million have been sold in the last 50 years.
